Elizabeth Banks will reprise her role in Emmy-winning US sitcom Modern Family.

The Hunger Games star appeared on season one of the hit show as party girl Sal.

She hasn’t guest starred on the programme since, while stars Sofia Vergara, Eric Stonestreet, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Julie Bowen have gone on to give award-winning performances.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Elizabeth’s character has ditched her party girl ways and “will deliver big news” to Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet’s coupled-up characters Mitch and Cam that she is getting married.

It is thought her character will ask the pair for help planning her wedding.

The actress is scheduled to begin filming her role next week for an episode set to air next year.

Modern Family has had a host of guest stars help to propel the show to success.

Matthew Broderick and Shelley Long are among those who have featured in the series.

Modern Family aired its first episode in September 2009 and quickly became a television favourite.

The show is currently broadcasting its fourth season.
