Events for the fourth annual Glasgow Music and Film Festival went on sale today. Co-curated by the film fanatics at Glasgow Film Festival and the music buffs at The Arches, GMFF is a mini-festival within Glasgow Film Festival, celebrating the long, strange and wonderful relationship between music and cinema with an exciting programme of performances, rockumentaries, live soundtrack events and AV explorations.
In a one-off, exclusive event, chanteuse, muse and eternal sex symbol Jane Birkin flies into Glasgow for the UK premiere of her film Souvenirs of Serge, an intimate and candid personal history of her relationship with the late Serge Gainsbourg, revealed through never-seen-before footage. The premiere will be followed by Songs of Serge, an intimate live performance by Birkin of her lover’s best-known works.
For Sonic Cineplex, The Arches will be transformed into an underground Cineplex for a day, with rare screenings and live soundtracks happening in nooks and crannies throughout the iconic venue from 3pm–11pm. Headlining this festival-within-a-festival will be Detroit techno icon Jeff Mills, offering up another UK premiere with his brand new live score to Fritz Lang’s silent classic The Woman in the Moon.
Other events on sale today include the twenty-piece Auricle Ensemble creating a live performance around pioneering 1930s documentary The City; Nevada, an experimental study of Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller’s relationship, inspired by the music of multi-award-winning Scottish folk group Lau, who will perform live alongside the film; a screening of Whatever Gets You Through the Night, Cora Bissett and David Greig’s music/theatre/film collaboration featuring the cream of Scottish music talent, some of whom will be performing live; and the Calamity Jane Screening and Barn Dance, a hoedown in tribute to Doris Day’s best-loved role.
