(Cover) - EN Movies - Johnny Depp is to produce a modern-day remake of Don Quixote for Disney.
The Pirates of the Caribbean star has the green light for a big screen adaptation of the 1605 novel written by Miguel de Cervantes, according to Deadline.com.
The book tells the story of a hidalgo who sets out upon on a mission to revive chivalry under the name Don Quixote.
Johnny will produce the project for Walt Disney Pictures through his company Infinitum Nihil.
Jeff Morris and High Fidelity writer Steve Pink will pen the screenplay.
Johnny was originally set to star in a big screen adaptation of the novel directed by Terry Gilliam in 2000 as Don Quixote’s squire Sancho Panza.
Production on the film was eventually halted.
The failed attempt to make the movie was documented in Lost in La Mancha, a 2002 film narrated by Jeff Bridges.
There is no word yet as to whether Johnny will appear in his own version of the project.
He previously worked with Disney on the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, starring as Captain Jack Sparrow. He is set to reprise that role in a fifth installment of the movie tentatively set for release in 2015.
