James McAvoy has joked he will have a “Macbeth-off” with Sir Ian McKellen and Patrick Stewart when shooting the new X-Men film.

The Scottish star is gearing up to play Shakespeare’s famous character on the stage, following in the footsteps of Ian and Patrick.

The three actors will all appear in X-Men: Days of Future Past and James has laughed they may start quoting lines from the play at each other.

“I didn’t go; I don’t want it in my head,” he told Time Out, when asked if he’d seen Patrick starring as Macbeth. “I did see it on YouTube. A couple of times I thought, ‘I don’t know what the f**k I’m going to do with that line, I’ll have a look at how other people do it,’ and they don’t know what they’re doing either! It will be interesting when Sir Ian McKellen and Patrick and I are all working on X-Men. We might have a Macbeth-off. I might just go, ‘My Macbeth’s better than your Macbeth… And your Macbeth: hmm, not so sure.’”

Although he now commands parts in Hollywood blockbusters, James prides himself on remaining unaffected by his success.

He believes most people would be astounded if they knew just how ordinary most A-listers are.

“One of the weird things about Hollywood is we’re all imposters; we’re all just glammed up. At a proper Hollywood party – an Oscars party – you look around and go, ‘F**k, he’s a movie star and she’s a movie star and he got six million dollars for a film,’ but it’s clear everybody’s the same. Your initial instinct might be, ‘How the f**k did I get here'’ but after a couple of years you go, ‘The same way every f**ker else did.’”
