Taylor Lautner was shocked by how much more you can get away with on British TV.

The American hunk is best known for playing werewolf Jacob Black in the Twilight movies, but his Hollywood credentials didn't deter him when it came to making the move onto the smaller screen across the pond.

He's currently playing Dale in BBC show Cuckoo, opposite Brit stars Greg Davies and Helen Baxendale.

“I knew you guys could get away with much more than we can in the US but even so, I was shocked!" Taylor laughed to British newspaper The Sun.

“That’s one of the things that attracted me - there are so many less restrictions than we deal with in America.

“The writers were getting away with lots. I was very surprised but it is one of the things that I enjoyed most.”

Taylor jumped at the chance to star in the new show as it meant he got to add another string to his bow.

While known to fans the world over as his brooding Twilight character, Cuckoo meant the 22-year-old star got to try his hand at comedy.

"I wouldn’t say I was confident about comedy at first but I wanted to give it a shot. I knew I would be surrounded by people who knew what they were doing so that would be a huge help - and that’s exactly how it turned out. I couldn’t have been luckier," he gushed.

“It was a big risk for me but I’m so glad I did it. My goal after the Twilight franchise was to challenge myself with a wide range of roles and genres."
