Caitlyn Jenner made her transition public to help take the issue "out of the gutter".
The former Olympian confirmed she was transgender in April 2015, and she revealed her identity on the cover of Vanity Fair magazine two months later. Since then Caitlyn has documented her new life in her reality TV show I Am Cait, something she's intensely proud of.
"I do see it, it's tough," she told Britain's Heat magazine of criticism of her. "But I'm only a spokesperson for my story and I have so much to learn about women. It's only been nine months. I wanted to take this issue out of the gutter. But I'm very famous for calling people who write articles about me. My reaction is to say to them, 'I think you had some very legitimate points in your article. My only criticism is you don't know me. So let's get to know each other.'"
Caitlyn was adamant her programme would be very different to Keeping Up with the Kardashians (KUWTK), which stars her ex-wife Kris Jenner and Kris's children Kim, Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian, as well as Kris and Caitlyn's kids Kylie and Kendall Jenner. While she has nothing against their show, I Am Cait is more serious.
"I love my kids. I have a great relationship with all my children, but this is a different show," she said. "This is about a serious issue. Sure, we all love good clothes and a peek inside wardrobes, but I wanted people to get to know all of my trans friends. I wanted to keep a distance from KUWTK, but Kris and Kim have been on my show, and I shot a piece the other day with Kendall for KUWTK. My kids are great, and I love them."
Caitlyn went along for the ride when appearing on KUWTK, rather than it being something she was excited to do. That stands in terms of her whole life, as being a celebrity holds little appeal.
"I've never sought fame. That's just not me," she said. "I had very long talks about how I could do this (change gender) and do it properly - but I knew I had to do it publicly, because I was getting trashed so badly."
