Filmmaker Paul Feig is producing a comedy based on the true story of supermodels stranded in a snowstorm in the Andes mountains.

The Ghostbusters director will take charge of the adaptation of a 2013 Elle magazine article written by Mickey Rapkin.

The piece chronicled a real-life drama when models including Mick Jagger's ex-wife Jerry Hall found themselves trapped at a remote ski resort in South America when a severe snowstorm hit during a location shoot for high-end department store Neiman Marcus.

The group decided to party out the big freeze and turned the lodge they were staying in into a private Studio 54 club, filled with drugs and alcohol - and they even staged an impromptu fashion show.

While Feig is signed on to executive produce the film, he is not expected to direct the adaptation, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Feig has enjoyed a string of blockbuster successes with his female-led comedies over the past few years, with Bridesmaids, The Heat, Spy and this month's (Jul16) Ghostbusters, which he initially was hesitant to direct.

Feig admits he didn't feel confident enough to take on such a beloved franchise, and it wasn't until former Sony Pictures boss Amy Pascal convinced him to accept the challenge.

"Just as I was heading into post-production on Spy, she took me for lunch and asked, ‘Why don’t any of you comedy guys want to do this?’" Paul previously recalled to Den of Geek.

"I said, 'It’s this giant thing. It’s like redoing The Godfather'. And she said, 'It’s this great franchise. It’s sitting there forever and it’s such a cool thing'. But I left, saying no.

"Yet I thought she was right. It’s such a great idea. I love the original movies so much, but there’s so much more you could be doing with that. The next day I got thinking: if I was going to do it, how would I do it? Let’s think positively. And I thought, 'Wait, I could do it with the funny women I know.'"

Ghostbusters, featuring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon, has grossed over $124 million (£94 million) at the global box office.
