David Bowie's filmmaker son Duncan Jones has honoured his father's memory by naming his newborn son after the late music icon.

Jones took to Twitter on Friday (29Jul16) to announce the birth of Stenton David Jones, who arrived earlier this month (Jul16), six months after the Fame legend passed away following a secret battle with cancer.

The director and his wife Rodene Ronquillo gave their newborn, who would have been Bowie's first grandchild, his middle name in tribute to his late grandfather.

"Stenton David Jones. Born July 10th, exactly six months after his grandad made room for him. Love you both so (sic)," Jones wrote on the social media site.

The 45-year-old, who married photographer Rodene in 2012, revealed her pregnancy in February (16) by tweeting a picture of a pregnant cartoon character with an umbilical cord sticking out of its stomach.

The bittersweet caption read, "1 month since dad died today. Made this card for him at Christmas. Due in June. Circle of life. Love you, granddad (sic)."

The Starman musician passed away on 10 January (16), aged 69. While the family is still coming to terms with the singer's death, Jones recently revealed he was glad he got a chance to tell his father how much he meant to him.

"I was very fortunate, we got a chance to say our goodbyes," he said on the Nerdist podcast. "It's a weird one for me, I don't really know how to talk about it or what to say about it - other than the fact that we got a chance to say our goodbyes.

"Weird things make me miss him, but it's still early days. I'm sure I always will, but it's tricky. He was a big gravitational pull in my life as far as who I saw myself as. How I separated myself from the world and how I saw myself."

Jones, born Duncan Zowie Haywood Jones, is Bowie's eldest child, with ex-wife Angie Bowie. The director has been estranged from Angie for more than 30 years, and told British newspaper the Mail on Sunday it was the right decision to stop speaking to his mother.

"We stopped communicating when I was 13 and it was the right choice then and I'm convinced it's still the right choice now," he said. "'She's a woman who didn't have a very positive effect on my upbringing so I think it was the right move."

Bowie, real name David Jones, later married supermodel Iman in 1992, and the pair welcomed daughter Alexandria Lexi Zahra Jones in 2000.
