John Travolta: 'Son Benjamin bonded our family after Jett's death'

John Travolta's son Benjamin helped to bring the family together after the tragic death of his older brother Jett.

Jett was 16 when he passed away in 2009, after suffering a seizure while the family was on vacation in the Bahamas. Benjamin was born the following year.

"We certainly have bonded together and certainly having little Ben has been a beautiful kind of glue for us to re-bond after tremendous loss," John told U.S. breakfast show Good Morning America on Monday (25Sep16).

Following Jett's death, the 62-year-old, who is also father to 16-year-old Ella Bleu with wife Kelly Preston, turned to his religion, Scientology, to help him cope with the pain.

"(It is) the worst thing that's ever happened in my life," he told British TV personality Barry Norman in 2014. "The truth is, I didn't know if I was going to make it. Life was no longer interesting to me, so it took a lot to get me better."

"I will forever be grateful to Scientology for supporting me for two years solid, I mean Monday through Sunday," he continued. "They didn't take a day off, working through different angles of the techniques to get through grief and loss, and to make me feel that finally I could get through a day."

In 2012, Travolta contemplated retiring after the tragedy, saying, "I lost my son a few years ago and I had, you know, been having quite a time of that and after three years of getting a lot of support from my church and a lot of support from people, fans, family, I decided it was OK to go back to work. Because I had even thought about retiring at one point, because it just felt like too much."

However, he eventually returned to the big and small screens in a number of roles and is currently portraying mob boss John Gotti Sr. in The Life and Death of John Gotti, which is due out next year (17).
