Jeremy Renner has blasted the lack of "quality roles" for women in Hollywood.

The 45-year-old actor stars alongside Amy Adams in upcoming extra-terrestrial movie Arrival. Amy's part in the film is a departure from the usual depiction of the woman as a victim in many big movies, and that's something Jeremy found particularly appealing about the project.

“There just are never enough lead roles, especially quality lead roles, for women in Hollywood,” he said during an appearance on U.K. television show Good Morning Britain on Wednesday (12Oct16). “This (Arrival) is just, I think, a spectacular one because she’s not victimised, she’s not anything else - she’s actually a superhero, she saves the world.

“She doesn’t have superpowers or anything but she’s a smart woman, she’s a linguist and she’s all the things that I think make a woman, a woman.”

The film is also a change in style for Jeremy, who has become known for his action roles over the past few years, starring in films such as The Avengers, The Bourne Legacy and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation.

But the chance to sink his teeth into the meaty script and exciting role was something Jeremy couldn't turn down.

“(Playing a mathematician) was a big departure from things I have done in the past, and to work with Amy and support Amy in this movie, and to work with (director) Denis Villeneuve was an absolute treasure,” he smiled.

The show hosts also asked Jeremy for his views on the presidential race in America. Both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton are vying for the top spot, with their latest televised debate labelled the nastiest presidential debate in history.

Speaking about the drama surrounding November's (16) election, Jeremy said: “It’s all quite disgusting to be honest with you. But I do love the idea of what’s happening in the sense that we have had a black man as president and we now have the potential to have a woman as our president. But yeah it’s a big debacle and we’re in trouble.”
