James McAvoy broke his hand on the set of his new movie Split after he got angry at not getting a scene.

The Scottish star plays Kevin in M. Night Shyamalan’s new horror thriller, a man who suffers with multiple split personalities. Kevin kidnaps three girls, who must try and use his different alter egos to help them escape.

During one exhausting scene, McAvoy got so annoyed with his performance that he ended up seriously injuring himself.

“There's a big scene (where he) transforms between character, when they're all reaching for the light, and we reshot it,” Shyamalan told aintitcool.com. “He was exhausted when we did it the first time. It was the end of the original shoot and it was so challenging. He has to switch-switch-switch-switch-switch-switch and with absolute authenticity and bringing love and passion for each of them.

“He got upset and he hit the door, which he thought was a fake door, but it was a solid metal door. He hit it and he broke his hand, but we didn't realise it. He was so angry that he couldn't get this. We did the scene again and again and he couldn't get it perfect.”

Shyamalan adds that viewers can see that James’ hand is “completely blown up, broken” during the scene where he's on a train and he's putting on his glasses.

James has a total 24 personalities in the film, including a 10-year-old boy called Hedwig who has a lisp, an intellect named Orwell and someone called Patricia.

Split premiered at America’s Fantastic Fest in September (16) and hits cinemas from January (17).
