Movies including La La Land, Moonlight and Hacksaw Ridge will compete for the top film prizes at the 2017 Golden Globes.
The musical, starring Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, has been nominated for the Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy prize alongside Deadpool, Florence Foster Jenkins, Sing Street, and 20th Century Women, while Moonlight and Hacksaw Ridge are up for the Best Motion Picture – Drama as well as Lion, Manchester by the Sea and Hell or High Water.
Manchester by the Sea's Casey Affleck, who won the best actor Critics' Choice Award on Sunday (11Dec16), could continue his streak after scoring a mention in the movie drama category but he will face off against British actor Andrew Garfield (Hacksaw Ridge), Denzel Washington (Fences), Joel Edgerton (Loving) and Viggo Mortensen (Captain Fantastic).
Nominees for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama include Natalie Portman for Jackie, Ruth Negga for Loving, Amy Adams for Arrival, Miss Sloane's Jessica Chastain and Isabelle Huppert for Elle.
La La Land's Stone and Gosling also score acting mentions in the musical or comedy categories. Gosling will compete against Colin Farrell (The Lobster), Hugh Grant (Florence Foster Jenkins), Jonah Hill (War Dogs) and Ryan Reynolds (Deadpool) and Stone will do battle with Meryl Streep (Florence Foster Jenkins), Annette Bening (20th Century Women), Lily Collins (Rules Don't Apply) and Hailee Steinfeld (The Edge of Seventeen).
In the TV categories, dramas The Crown, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, This is Us and Westworld landed nominations while Atlanta, Mozart in the Jungle, Transparent, Veep and Black-ish scored mentions for musical or comedy.
The People vs. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story came high in the mentions for TV movie or limited series with acting nominations for its stars Sarah Paulson, Sterling K. Brown and Courtney B. Vance, as well as The Night Manager and its actors Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman. Other nominees for best limited series or TV movie include The Night Of, American Crime and The Dresser.
Meryl Streep was previously announced as the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award for career achievement.
The nominations were announced by Don Cheadle, Laura Dern and Anna Kendrick at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles on Monday (12Dec16).
The 74th annual Golden Globes, hosted by talk show host Jimmy Fallon, are set to take place at the same hotel on 8 January (17).
