Actor Ewan McGregor has officially filed for divorce after splitting from his wife of over 20 years in 2017.

The Trainspotting star has cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for the break-up of his marriage to Eve Mavrakis.

Reports about the couple's split circulated after McGregor was photographed kissing his Fargo co-star Mary Elizabeth Winstead in a London cafe in October (17).

Sources revealed Ewan and Eve had split at the beginning of the summer.

In his divorce papers, obtained by TMZ, the actor has requested joint custody of the former couple's three minor children.

Eve's lawyer Laura Wasser, who also filed paperwork on Friday, is asking for sole physical custody with visitation going to Ewan.

McGregor is also offering to pay spousal support.

The former couple has no prenuptial agreement.

Ewan proved his estranged wife is still on his mind as he thanked her onstage when he won his first Golden Globe award on 7 January (18).

The Scottish star landed the Best Performance by an Actor in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television prize for his dual roles in crime drama Fargo, in which he portrayed twins Emmit and Ray Stussy, and as he collected the honour in Los Angeles, he took a moment to express his gratitude for his family's support.

He said, "I want to take a moment to just say thank you to Eve, who's always stood by me for 22 years, and my four children - Clara, Esther, Jamyan, and Anouk - I love you."

The 46-year-old also gave a shout out to Winstead as he praised his Fargo co-stars for helping him deliver a top performance.

"I've always loved being an actor and loved hanging out with actors, and I got amazing actors to work with on this," Ewan explained, "and there wouldn't be any Emmit Stussy without David Thewlis and Michael Stuhlbarg and Carrie Coon, and there would have been no Ray without Mary Elizabeth Winstead, so thank you very much."

Winstead accompanied him to the Golden Globes.
