Hugh Jackman and Jake Gyllenhaal joined forces on Thursday (20Dec18) to play a holiday prank on Ryan Reynolds by tricking him into wearing an ugly Christmas sweater.

The three pals made plans to meet up for a festive toast, but only Ryan arrived dressed according to the party theme - or so he thought.

The Deadpool star took to Instagram to share a photo of himself looking glum in his red and green sweater, which featured a large gold bow on the front, as Hugh and Jake stood on either side of him laughing.

A second shot captured the pranksters bursting out in laughter as they high-fived one another, with Ryan unmoved in the background.

"These f**king a**holes said it was a sweater party," he captioned the funny pictures.

However, it appears Ryan was in a forgiving mood as Jake later posted another snap of himself and Ryan, his co-star from last year's movie Life, laughing together on his Instagram Story timeline.

"#HeForgaveMe," Jake wrote.

Ryan and Hugh, who worked together on 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, have been engaged in a friendly rivalry ever since Jackman announced he was hanging up his claws as the titular Marvel mutant following 2017's Logan, even though Reynolds has tried his best to convince the Australian action man to reprise the character one more time for a feature in a future Deadpool movie.

"I call him every other day and every other day, he takes my call," Ryan told TV personality Ellen DeGeneres earlier this month (Dec18), revealing the two stars' social media "feud" has become a "war".

Responding to the Canadian's comments, Hugh told U.S. breakfast show Today, "We're going to a new level, I didn't know that! I'll take on the war!"
