Director M. Night Shyamalan can't believe he had the fortitude and support to conclude his trilogy after 18 years in the making.
The Sixth Sense moviemaker always had hopes for a sequel to his 2000 superhero film Unbreakable but his dreams never came to pass until he used a discarded character from the Unbreakable script to make Split in 2016. He then decided to bring the cast and characters from both films together to conclude their stories in upcoming movie Glass.
Speaking at the film's London premiere recently, Shyamalan told reporters that he can't believe he has finally managed to conclude this chapter.
"In the five minutes I have been alone in a hotel room, I’ve been reflecting about it all and I feel nostalgic about it and grateful," he said. "It feels like a chapter closing on a part of a career, from like 21 years old until now, and I can’t believe I’ve had the fortitude and the love from everybody, the support from the fans and the studio, to do this.... It's so miraculous that this movie was made."
For Glass, the 48-year-old brought Bruce Willis and Samuel L. Jackson from Unbreakable and James McAvoy and Anya Taylor-Joy from Split back together, with Sarah Paulson in a pivotal new role.
Shyamalan added that he wanted to make sure he created scenes in the script that would really show what his leading men are capable of.
"I want Bruce and Sam and James to feel honoured, as they should be, by the things they do, because I really believe in them and I want them to get all of the accolades they deserve. So I’ve tried to make something for them that really showcases their strengths," he continued.
"It was three iconic actors doing their most iconic roles together. It was real, they were really doing big scenes together over and over, challenging each other. We were really pushing (each other) as much as we could to get the best performances out. So it was fantastic."
Glass hits cinemas from 18th January (19).
