Michael Sheen and Matthew Rhys will lead the star-studded cast of an animated movie version of infamous novel Heart of Darkness.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Welsh actors signed up to voice characters in the feature film, which is adapted from Joseph Conrad's classic 1899 novel.

Andrew Scott is also on board, with Gerald Conn to direct the movie, the outlet reports.

The novel follows the story of Marlow, a seaman captaining a steamboat up the River Congo in search of a mysterious figure named Kurtz who had carved out a kingdom in which he has the power of life and death over his African subjects.

Conrad's book has inspired the likes of films such as 1979's Oscar-winning movie, Apocalypse Now, which starred Marlon Brando and Martin Sheen.

Heart of Darkness is set to be presented at the European Film Market in Berlin later this year (19), and director Conn is reportedly using an animation technique he specialises in using sand.

Production is taking place across Wales, Ireland and Belgium.

Sheen – who is also serving as executive producer – is set to voice the wayward Kurtz, with Scott voicing the Russian sailor Harlequin, and The Americans star Rhys playing a relative of Marlow's that he meets on the journey up the River Congo.

The central role of Marlow is still being cast, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Sheen, 49, recently hit the headlines after it was revealed he had contributed an undisclosed amount of funds towards protecting a Banksy wall mural in his native Wales.

The Season's Greetings piece, which depicts a boy playing in the ash from a fire, appeared overnight on steelworker Ian Lewis' garage in Port Talbot in December (18), attracting crowds of visitors.

A sheet of plastic has since also been installed to help protect the piece, with the Frost/Nixon star among those donating to the preservation of the Banksy art.
