Amy Schumer revealed her husband's autism diagnosis in the hope that it will help to break stigmas surrounding the condition.
In her new Netflix stand-up special Amy Schumer: Growing, the comedy star opens up about how Chris Fischer, who she married in February 2018, has autism spectrum disorder (ASD).
Describing the chef and cookbook author as being "high-functioning" during an appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Wednesday (20Mar19), Amy explained that they decided to share his story as a means of encouraging others to seek help.
"We both wanted to talk about it because it's been totally positive," she said. "I think a lot of people resist getting diagnosed and even some of their children because of the stigma that comes along with it... I just wanted to encourage people to not be afraid of that stigma... I think there a lot of people with autism who go undiagnosed when I think their life could be better if they got those tools."
Amy went on to emphasise that Chris' life and his "trajectory" wasn't necessarily the same as others with ASD, and even though he is "incapable of lying," she joked that she "wouldn't trade him in" for anyone.
Elsewhere in the interview, the Trainwreck actress spoke about her pregnancy, as she is currently expecting her first child, and discussed how she’s been battling hyperemesis gravidarum, a type of severe morning sickness.
"It's been pretty tough," the 37-year-old sighed. "I didn't know pregnancies could be such a bummer. I really didn't know. I still have hyperemesis, I threw up a bunch of times on the way here. But I'm lucky, I have good healthcare, and I can get an IV and survive."
Seth also asked Amy if she knows the sex of the baby.
"We do. But we don't care however the baby identifies, as long as they don't identify as a DJ. That's disgusting,” she deadpanned.
