John Singleton suffers stroke

Oscar-nominated director John Singleton has reportedly been hospitalised after suffering a stroke.

According to TMZ sources, the filmmaker checked himself into a Los Angeles medical centre earlier this week (begs15Apr19) after experiencing weakness in his leg following a flight back from Costa Rica.

Doctors have since determined the 51 year old suffered a "mild" stroke, and are currently conducting further tests, while also providing him with rehabilitation treatment.

The news has prompted an outpouring of support from celebrity friends and fans online, with rap legend Snoop Dogg among the first to ask fans to keep Singleton in their thoughts.

"Pray 4 my brother @johnsingleton (sic)," he captioned an Instagram photo of the pair.

Actress Nia Long, who featured in his classic film Boyz n the Hood, also shared a picture of Singleton on Twitter and wrote, "Praying hard this morning for my friend @johnsingleton PULL THROUGH BABY (sic)".

"Prayers up for @SHAFT6816," Higher Learning star Omar Epps tweeted. "Pull thru (sic) brother! The world needs your voice and vision. Prayers up for your family as well".

Singleton made Academy Awards history with his seminal 1991 movie, becoming the youngest filmmaker to score nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay.

The movie marked his directorial debut, and served as the first acting roles for N.W.A. rap icon Ice Cube and Morris Chestnut. Boys n the Hood also featured Cuba Gooding, Jr. Laurence Fishburne, Regina King, and Angela Bassett.

He also directed Samuel L. Jackson's 2000 Shaft remake, Poetic Justice, 2 Fast 2 Furious, Baby Boy, and Four Brothers, and he was the man behind the camera for Michael Jackson's Remember The Time music video.

Singleton's TV credits include episodes of The People vs. OJ Simpson: American Crime Story, Empire, and Billions.
