Get Out has been voted the best film of the year by movie critics

The critically acclaimed American horror film has topped movie magazine Empire’s list of the Top 10 Films of 2017.

Directed by Jordan Peele and originally screened at the Sundance Film Festival in January, Get Out features a young interracial couple who visit the woman's parents, uncovering a conspiracy whereby young black adults are being captured. The film has grossed over $254 million worldwide, against its $4.5 million budget.

In second place is Blade Runner 2049, set thirty years after the first film and starring Ryan Gosling and Harrison Ford. In third is multi Oscar-winning musical rom-com La La Land, also starring Gosling with Academy-award winner Emma Stone.

Elsewhere in the top ten are Best Picture winner Moonlight in fourth and Christopher Nolan’s WWII epic, Dunkirk, featuring Harry Styles’ acting debut, in sixth.

Commenting on the list, Empire’s editor-in-chief Terri White said: “A great deal of shouting, gesticulating and hair-pulling went into Empire’s end of year list. 2017 was simply a remarkable year for film - it was particularly notable for its recognition of diversity, with several films that explored the LGBT and African-American experience being critical and commercial hits. Sleeper horror Get Out - the debut feature from filmmaker Jordan Peele is our worthy number one, resonating with audiences as one of the most original films to hit cinemas in years.”
