A curated programme by The xx, a (twice!) sold-out #Metoo event with Jenny Wilson and ethio-jazz legend Mulatu Astatke are among the highlights of this year's music programme, where women artists are highly represented.
For the 15th time, the international documentary film festival CPH:DOX will this March take over Copenhagen and the whole of Denmark with 11 days of film, events, concerts and much more.
The entire festival programme will be revealed on the 16th of February, but today we release this year's music programme, which consists of the film series Sound & Vision and the concert series AUDIO:VISUALS that bring together music and visual art. The programme release will be celebrated at the launch tonight (the 9th of February) with the screening of the documentary 'Grace Jones: Bloodlight and Bami' at Empire Bio at 21:00.
A curated programme by The xx
This year's curated film programme will also take on a musical tone. The xx vocalist and bassist, Oliver Sim, has led the curation of the film programme and, together with his bandmate Romy, will visit the festival sharing some of his favourite films.
The London trio will present a series of films and live events that will explore themes of identity, gender, performance, youth culture and LGBTIQ issues. The programme deliberately shares a name with The xx's most recent album - 2017's acclaimed I See You - with their film selection being informed by many of the same themes and emotions the band explore through their music.
Women take the spotlight
We are excited to announce that the number of women artists in the music programme is this year bigger than ever at CPH:DOX. Adam Thorsmark, head of the music programme, says:
"(CPH:DOX) did not deliberately aim for a balanced gender quota, we just wanted to represent and celebrate the great amount of talented women artists in the world right now."
You can discover artists ranging from young rising stars like the Swedish-Syrian feminist rapper Silvana Imam, to music legends like the 82-year-old singer Shirley Collins, who will both take the stage after film screenings about themselves. SILVANA will also hit the Danish cinemas with a DOXBIO premiere on April 4, screening all over the country. The music film programme also features films about superstars M.I.A, Betty Davis and Grace Jones. You will also be able to experience Jenny Wilson performing her new #Metoo album 'Exorcism' and concerts by visionary musicians such as Laurel Halo and Lolina (Inga Copeland).
However, the programme did not leave out the talented gentlemen either, including films about the post punk band The Minds of 99, the Japanese composer Ryuichi Sakamoto and the jazz wizard Milford Graves. You can experience see special audiovisual concerts by the Choir of Young Believers, Schultz & Forever and Dan Deacon, among others. Finally, the legend Mulatu Astatke, the figure behind the ethic-jazz genre, will present a rare Danish concert after the screening of the film 'Ethiopiques'.
Party lovers should not miss our opening ceremony at Kunsthal Charlottenborg on the 16th of March, the free Iris Gold concert at Natbar on the 23rd and the Final Party on the 24th with a DJ-set by Hot Chip!
