Picturehouse Central successfully hosted Sundance Film Festival: London 2018 for the third time this year from 31 May to 3 June 2018. The festival presented twelve feature films from Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah, USA, including a surprise screening of Bart Layton’s American Animals, alongside two short film programmes, inspiring panels, workshops and parties. The programme also featured the UK premieres of Idris Elba’s Yardie, Paul Schrader’s First Reformed and Desiree Akhavan’s The Miseducation Of Cameron Post. The Audience Favourite Award was presented to Bo Burnham for his directorial debut, Eighth Grade and Amy Adrion was the recipient of the first ever #WhatNext Award for her documentary Half The Picture.
Seven of the twelve films in the 2018 programme were directed by women, and the festival showcased an array of female leads and female-focused stories. Sundance Film Festival: London provided an opportunity for the US and UK film industries to connect and discuss #WhatNext amid the film industry’s period of dramatic change as movements such as Time’s Up and #MeToo continued to highlight inequality. Featuring international and UK premieres direct from the 2019 Sundance Film Festival in Utah, the 2019 London edition will continue to champion underrepresented voices and will highlight the excellent work from a diverse range of storytellers.
Over thirty filmmakers and actors attended the festival in 2018 to introduce their films and participate in audience Q&As, including Toni Collette and Ari Aster for Hereditary; Ethan Hawke for First Reformed; Idris Elba and cast members from his directorial debut Yardie; and Crystal Moselle and the cast of Skate Kitchen.
The 2019 Sundance Film Festival, running from 24 January to 3 February in Park City, Utah, USA, announced its impressive initial 112-feature line-up at the end of November -- including work from 45 first-time filmmakers, with 40% of the films directed by women, 36% by a filmmaker of colour and 13% by a filmmaker who identifies as LGBTQ. The 2019 Sundance London programme will be announced next spring.
