John Reilly wants to only sell the inherited mansion but after the car crash that blinded his daughter and killed his son, he might just stay a little while in it, to fix his marriage. Three weeks in Italy and then he hopes that love and life will return to his bones. However the castle might be the undoing of everything, with its dark family secrets....
Stuart Gordon previous films FROM BEYOND and RE ANIMATOR were horror, black comedy greats. This film is a little more European in custombut also American in its satirical swipe at Europe. Gordon gives us jet black comedy and digs at the old world and its waiting to bite back at the US. Gordon is the master of the gore filled execution and exploration of the body and this is his magnum opus of clever reflection and allegory. He tempers the gore and keeps it as an aid to the serious issues of monogamy, gender roles and patriachy. It has sublime and silly turns by Jeff Combs and Barbara Cramptonbut the stand out is the monster. He is dark, evil and heartfelt and this is an amazing achievement. As seen in FROM BEYOND, Gordon frames with cinematic grace and this aids the subversion of horror and the comedy genres. Sardonic depth is also found in the mixed of visual and audio.
88 films have outdone themselves with a belter of a disc. HD print 10 on 10, Mix on sound in 5.1 version 10 on 10. Castle speak and the making of 10 on 10. The EVIL CLERGYMAN is a must watch. Mr Waddells booklet is excellent and he is always great at these but here it is a pleasure. A great interview of both Band and Gordon, alongside very rich detail and content. BUY IT!!!
