The silver screen is where dreams are made and broken. Just for the Record is a story of the latter, as a cast and crew of egotists, dreamers and incompetents recount their experiences making the worst film of all time. Presided over by judge, jury and acerbic executioner Andy Wiseman, the trial of Just for the Record is a catalogue of mistakes, mishaps and deluded excesses. There’s the writer, who dreams of highbrow epics but can barely string a plot together. The director, whose technical incompetence is matched only by his lack of vision. The producer, mired in alcohol and women, so in love with the trappings of his job that he forgets to do the actual job itself. The fading star, more interested in his next brandy than his next acting role. And it doesn’t stop there, as the full catalogue of film faces are here – the diva actress, the executive who is nothing but hot air, the excitable first AD whose love for the director outweighs all, the beautician-turned-make up artist, the tarty costumier, the old-school DOP with a hatred for digital technology, and so on, and so on. As the cast of losers parade their failures and neuroses, each one pointing the finger of blame at someone else, the catalogue of calamities reaches near-biblical proportions, and the question becomes not ‘Who is to blame'’ but ‘Who Isn’t'’.
Just for the Record is a true Brollywood story – which is to say, it’s all fictional and none of these people are real (or based on real people – honest), but it’s a story that anyone who has ever worked in the low-budget UK film industry will recognise, and cringe at, while everyone else will be rolling in the aisles at this broad, warm-hearted, winning British comedy.
