THE TWO WORLDS
OF CHARLIE F.
FIRST THEY LIVED IT. NOW THEY’RE PERFORMING IT

DVD Released 19th November 2012

“Theatre at its most direct, vital and moving. Inspirational stuff.” - Michael Sheen

On 19th November 2012, the ground-breaking and award-winning West End play - ‘THE TWO WORLDS OF CHARLIE F.’ will arrive on DVD, released by Brightspark Productions. This unique theatrical experience, captured on film by acclaimed filmmaker Chris Terrill of Uppercut Films, marries two distinct worlds - that of the military and the professional theatre, with profound, emotional and deeply moving results.

For the first time ever, a group of wounded, injured and sick members of the Armed Forces joined up with a professional theatre company to help write, rehearse and perform a play based on their own experiences of service, injury and recovery. Organised and funded by The Royal British Legion and The Theatre Royal Haymarket Masterclass Trust, the aim was to use theatre and drama to aid the recovery of these courageous warriors as well as bring their incredible stories to the West End stage. Award-winning British playwright Owen Sheers wrote the play and it was directed by top-ranking West End theatre director Stephen Rayne. The project, entitled the Bravo 22 Company was produced for Masterclass and the Legion by Alice Driver.

When THE TWO WORLDS OF CHARLIE F. opened at the Theatre Royal Haymarket for two shows in January 2012, Bravo 22 Company brought to the stage one of the most memorable nights of theatre ever witnessed in the West End. An emotional Ray Winstone, Bravo 22 Ambassador for the project said, “That is probably the most moving thing I’ve seen for a long, long time.”

A tearful Sir Trevor Nunn added;
“I was just swept away. I thought I was watching a professional experience and yet the authenticity of what was happening was more exhilarating than we can ever encounter when professionals are talking about the subject of war and the aftermath of war.”

Arnold M Crook, Chairman of The Theatre Royal Haymarket and Trustee of the Masterclass Trust commented;

“I am delighted that such a worthwhile project will now reach a far wider audience. Raising the awareness of the journey these soldiers go through plays a crucial part in their recovery as the world gets to understand the reality of their experiences.”

Sue Freeth, The Royal British Legion’s Director of Operations commented;

“The Legion is proud to have funded this very innovative and unique recovery project for members of the Armed Forces community. We are very pleased that the DVD will give a chance for those who couldn’t attend the theatre the chance to see and be inspired by these individuals’ stories of recovery”.

During the summer the production embarked on a small U.K. tour visiting Birmingham, Cardiff and Edinburgh Fringe Festival where audiences met every performance with full-house standing ovations.

More recently, THE TWO WORLDS OF CHARLIE F. was awarded Amnesty’s prestigious Freedom of Expression Theatre Award, given to a play carrying a human rights message.
