Adam Driver: Life is crappy

Adam Driver thinks “life’s sh*tty” most of the time.

The 30-year-old Girls actor has a thriving career at the moment, as he appears in major movies like romcom What If and Star Wars: Episode VII, amongst others in the coming year.

And Adam takes his profession seriously, as he believes it offers people respite from the trials of their existence.

“Here’s the thing, life’s sh*tty, and we’re all gonna die. You have friends, and they die. You have a disease, someone you care about has a disease, Wall Street people are scamming everyone, the poor get poorer, the rich get richer. That’s what we’re surrounded by all the time,” he explained in the September issue of America’s GQ magazine.

“We don’t understand why we’re here, no one’s giving us an answer, religion is vague, your parents can’t help because they’re just people, and it’s all terrible, and there’s no meaning to anything. What a terrible thing to process! Every. Day. And then you go to sleep. But then sometimes, things can suspend themselves for like a minute, and then every once in a while there’s something where you find a connection.”

Adam spent two years and eight months in the United States Marine Corps before being medically discharged due to an injury he sustained in a training exercise.

He then created a charity called Arts in the Armed Forces, which puts on shows for military personnel, and the star is happy to have a hand in lifting the spirits of soldiers.

“When I think of my military experience, I don’t think of the drills and discipline and pain,” Adam said. “I think of these, like, really intimate, human moments of people wanting to go AWOL because they missed their wives, or someone’s dead and they can’t deal with it. And that’s what I wanted to show.”
