Amy Adams found confidence later in life.
The flame-haired actress is one of Hollywood's most in demand leading ladies and has been nominated for five Oscars over the last eight years.
While the 40-year-old has never taken home a gold statue, her confidence continues to soar and she channels her self-assurance into screen roles.
"I've gained a lot of confidence in myself and have used it in my work. In my late 20s, I realised that I needed to change my attitude or I would be very unhappy. I stopped worrying and began to take more chances - and learnt to trust my instincts," Amy smiled to the American edition of OK! magazine.
Even though an Oscar still evades the star, she does have a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award sitting at home. Both were won for her role as Sydney Prosser in American Hustle, a sexy con-artist who works with Christian Bale's sleazy alter ego Irving Rosenfeld.
While she's happy to play a host of different roles, when she gets home she quickly drops the pretense. This is to make sure her daughter Aviana, with her fiancé Darren Le Gallo, isn't left perplexed.
"I try not to take my characters home with me. I don't want to confuse Aviana by being different from how mommy usually behaves. And I enjoy having friends outside the industry. It's important to not get trapped in a celebrity bubble," she explained.
