Amy Poehler can’t pretend things are perfect.

The actress has made a name for herself as one of Hollywood’s funniest women on shows such as Parks and Recreation and Saturday Night Live.

Rather than conform to the industry’s ideals, the 43-year-old is happy to admit when things aren’t going to plan.

"I like hard work and I don't like pretending things are perfect," she assured People magazine.

And things have been particularly tough for the star recently. She split from husband Will Arnett in 2012 and the divorce was finalised this year.

She addresses the split and her previous drug use in her new memoir Yes Please, but is now moving on with her life.

Luckily she has her sons with Will, Abel, four, and Archie, who turns six later this week, to keep her going.

"They really teach you to stay in the moment, since kids don't really care about the past or the future, and they're not interested in hoping for what will come. They're 'Let's play now!'"

she smiled.

And despite any past struggles, the star, who is currently dating Nick Kroll, wouldn’t change where she’s at right now.

"The older I get, I feel like the better my life has gotten," she said.

"I wouldn't give anything to be back in my 20s at all. Maybe I wouldn't mind the amount of sleep I got then or for my stomach to be smaller, but mentally, no way."
