Andrew Garfield: I'm not funny

Andrew Garfield describes his humour as "sick, twisted, not that funny".

The 30-year-old actor is currently riding high as Spider-Man / Peter Parker in the second instalment of the popular film franchise.

Producer of the new webbed wonder movie Avi Arad has credited Andrew with writing many of his own gags that feature in the film, but the British star brushes off his comedic skills.

"Personally, I think I’m more like Robert De Niro in The King Of Comedy," Andrew laughed to British newspaper Metro. "Sick, twisted, not that funny but really wishes he was…"

When it comes to his superhero role, Andrew admits he was first reluctant to take on such an iconic part.

The film co-stars Andrew's real life girlfriend Emma Stone, who plays Spider-Man's love interest Gwen Stacy. But it was actually their movie star credentials that nearly forced the actor to turn down the job of a life time.

"My main concerns about playing Spider-Man were about the lack of anonymity and being tied to a role for the rest of my life, because I’m really just interested in being an actor who can disappear into the story. I find movie stars distracting on screen," Andrew confessed.

"But the character that people really adore is Spider-Man and when I get to wear the suit, no one sees my face. They see the mask, so I’m safe with that. Also, they relate to Peter Parker, who’s a regular dude, and that is reassuring to me."

And while others laud over Andrew's comedy chops, he in turn can't help but gush about Emma's witty ways.

"I admire Emma because she is a real comedian. Both she and Jamie Foxx [who stars as Electro] are really funny people and there is something nice about that being inaccessible to me," he smiled.
