Anne Hathaway shouldn’t be given a “hard time” for the accent she uses in One Day, says her co-star.

The American actress is Emma in One Day, with Jim Sturgess playing her love interest Dexter. The movies follows the pair on the same day over 20 years, charting how their relationship changes.

It’s based on the book by David Nicholls, and in the tome Emma is from Yorkshire, North England. It meant Anne had to put on a voice while shooting, and some have claimed her vocals are too cut-glass. Jim insists that isn’t fair and has championed his co-star’s talent.

“It seems she’s in the firing line for that but she’s an actress. And when you’re an actress or an actor you play lots of different people from different walks of life from different parts of the world.

“That’s what makes acting so interesting so it seems a shame that she comes over here [to the UK] and people are giving her a hard time. She does an amazing job in the film,” he told British television show This Morning.

Jim and Anne became close while making One Day. They shot it while the soccer World Cup was on and Jim introduced the Hollywood star to the delights of the game.

They formed a close bond which was vital for making their on-screen chemistry believable.

“We hung out anyway. Making a film you spend so much time together. Our friendship developed over the course of the film and we shot so out of sequence, we were all over the place. We really had to keep a tab on where we were in the relationship and in our friendship as characters. We hung out on set and listened to music and played cards,” he explained.

“We got on very well, we were with each other every day.”
