Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway can relate to anyone who is left feeling vulnerable after making mistakes in public.
The 32-year-old star began her career when she was cast in a TV show at the age of 16, but her big break came when she appeared in 2001’s The Princess Diaries. Having been in the public eye since she was a teenager, Anne has learnt a lot about the effect success can have. This is one of the reasons she was drawn to her latest movie The Intern, in which she portrays hot shot career woman Jules.
“I'm ambitious and a hard worker like her. Jules is a little bit surprised everything is working out for her - I definitely relate to that,” she told Good Morning America.
“With that little bit of responsibility comes a lot of exposure and it's a vulnerable thing, to be a young person making mistakes in public and trying to learn through them. Jules is doing that big time and I certainly related to that.”
Jules is the head of a start-up online clothing firm which has taken the internet by storm, but finds herself coming up against sexism in the industry.
One of the key things for Anne was how strong the character is, a characteristic she thinks should be more prolific in on-screen women.
“Any time there is a great female role in Hollywood it makes me so happy,” she explained. “I don't think there are enough. I think there is room for plenty more.”
The Intern co-stars Robert De Niro, who plays Jules’ older helper at work called Ben. The two shared many scenes and so had to spend a great deal of time together, allowing them to forge a strong bond. Anne was impressed by how seriously her co-star took his work, especially as the flick is a comedy.
“He is a quiet guy, he is not a million jokes a minute. But he cares about what he does so much. He has such respect for everyone on the crew,” she said.
“I just loved being around him. And we wound up really getting along by the end of it we were very close and really fond of each other.'
