Antonio Banderas says DreamWorks started filming a Puss in Boots sequel days ago.

The 53-year-old actor voices the animated cat character, who first appeared in cartoon mega-hit Shrek.

The original Puss in Boots grossed $554.9 million at the box office when it was released in 2011, and it appears executives are attempting to capitalise on the feature’s popularity with a new instalment.

“We started the new one four days ago. It did incredibly well with audiences and critics, all around the world, and the character is going to keep going,” Antonio told Collider.

“This character was born almost 12 years ago. We have had a lot of fun with him, and it seems that audiences do, too. So, we’re doing another one.”

Antonio informs fans the next movie in the series has an entirely novel plotline.

He anticipates viewers will be pleasantly surprised by the screenplay.

“We take Puss to a completely different land which is very exotic,” Antonio revealed.

“When Chris Miller, the director, said, ‘I don’t want Puss to happen in the same universe as the Shrek movies visually, I want to do a spaghetti western,’ he is, in this case, trying to do an adventure movie so we’re taking him to a very exotic locale.”

No official release date has been set on the new Puss in Boots film.

Antonio stars in five movies this year, and will next be seen in Spanish sci-fi thriller Autómata.
