Cate Blanchett has apparently signed on to star as Lucille Ball in a new biopic.

The 46-year-old actress is said to be the frontrunner to take on the role of the famous Hollywood comedian-and-actress in Aaron Sorkin’s upcoming movie.

According to The Wrap, Aaron’s project will focus on Lucille’s marriage to her I Love Lucy co-star Desi Arnaz.

Lucille and Desi’s two children are apparently set to produce the film.

There is no word as yet as to who will take on the role of Desi, or when the movie will hit screens.

A representative for Cate declined to comment on the casting report when contacted by The Wrap.

The Australian has just finished filming Truth, a newsroom drama also starring Robert Redford and Elisabeth Moss.

Other movies under her belt include Manifesto, and an as yet Untitled Terrence Malick project also starring Rooney Mara, Natalie Portman and Christian Bale.

The film will be the second time she has starred alongside Rooney in a matter of months, with the most recent being Carol.

In the romantic drama, based on author Patricia Highsmith’s 1952 novel The Price of Salt, Rooney and Cate engage in a steamy lovemaking session during the film.

And Cate recalls what it was like to break the news to her mother June.

“It was her birthday, so I said to Mom: ‘Come to the film. Um, there’s a little bit of a sex scene where I kiss another woman’s nipple. Just warning you’,” Cate told the UK’s Daily Mail. “Phew! I wasn’t worried, but I just wanted her to know.”

Period drama Carol, which reaches theaters in December, takes place in the 1950s. The movie centres on the passionate romance between the married titular character and Rooney’s persona Therese Belivet, a young store clerk.
