Kate Bosworth wishes she had "sought more guidance" rather than bottling her feelings up when she was younger.

The 32-year-old actress landed her first big movie role aged 14 in The Horse Whisperer, which led to her deferring a place at university to pursue her acting dream.

Beginning her career so early meant Kate had to move around a lot and lost touch with a lot of friends who she hoped to reunite with once they were "back in sync". The new life was a struggle for the star and if it weren't for the support of a guidance counsellor, Kate wouldn't be where she is today.

"She gave me a lot of important tools to understand the person I wanted to be, without the confusion of the bumps and bruises you get growing up. I didn’t go to college, so I was thrown into: ‘Now you pay rent, now you go to auditions, now you make an impression on the world,' at 18 years old," she recalled to The Edit.

“If I could impart advice, it would be to find mentors – as many as possible. I started too young and I had to white-knuckle it a little bit. I kept things too bottled up. I just put my head down and fought through it, and I wish I had sought more guidance.”

On top of the professional's wise words Kate cites finding love with director Michael Polish as another aspect that changed her life. The pair met in 2011 during filming of the movie Big Sur and she still remembers how anxious she was when coming to terms with her feelings for him, realising it wasn't just an "artistic connection" they had.

Luckily Kate's worries that her other half wouldn't cast her again were quashed when her now-spouse cast her in three more movies since their first meeting and the blonde beauty thrives under his direction.

“I think most actors do their best work when they find the right director, whether it’s Scorsese and De Niro, or Penélope [Cruz] and [Pedro] Almodóvar, they find their person. It is a shorthand, and a very special relationship," Kate smiled.
