Brooke Shields felt “abandoned” by her mother.

The 49-year-old has enjoyed a successful career with lucrative modeling campaigns and starring roles in movies like The Blue Lagoon. However, in spite of her glossy image her childhood was burdened by her mother Teri Shields’ alleged alcohol addiction.

“I felt abandoned by her,” Brooke wrote in her upcoming memoir There Was A Little Girl, an excerpt of which was published on website Closer Weekly. “My unhappiness was rooted in my mother's inability to stop drinking.”

Teri passed away in 2012 at the age of 79, reportedly due to an illness related to dementia.

In her book, Brooke details having her mother as her manager for child modeling jobs. She felt this held her back from youthful adventures.

“While other kids were involved in playdates, I was shooting for various catalogues,” the star lamented.

The star felt her mother’s alcohol habit affected her negatively and amounted to “abuse”. The abandonment, according to Brooke, took place every time Teri picked up a drink.

“Because every time Mom drank, she left me,” she explained.

The Endless Love actress put aside her feelings in order to continue with life. She was able to rationalise what was going on by reminding herself that at least Teri was alive.

“But as long as I wasn't hurt and she was accounted for and alive, I could justify that everything was all right,” Brooke divulged.

Her memoir is set for release on November 18.
