(Cover) - EN Movies - Carey Mulligan loved playing a "brutal" character in her latest film.
The actress stars alongside Justin Timberlake and John Goodman in the musical drama Inside Llewyn Davis, which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival over the weekend.
Carey plays the role of complex Jean Berkey, a huge contrast to portraying party girl Daisy Buchanan in The Great Gatsby, which opened the French movie festival last week.
"I hadn't played or read a character with more than two lines of dialogue strung together and here I would be someone who speaks in paragraphs," she explained to British newspaper The Telegraph.
"I also loved how unkind Jean could be, how brutal even. Most of the women I play are quite empathetic, and Jean most certainly is not... We come into Jean and Llewyn's relationship at a heated time; things are heightened between them. She's so resentful and I loved that."
Carey plays a folk singer in the movie, who is married to a performer but also involved with musical genius Llewyn.
Llewyn is played by singer Oscar Isaac, and music star Stark Sands also features.
"Singing for me seems to be the most nerve-wracking thing to do," Carey admitted.
"And when you're surrounded by actual musicians like Oscar, Justin and Stark, it's even worse. Here I was with all these accomplished musicians so it was very intimidating."
The British star joked she lied to writers-and-directors Joel and Ethan Coen about being able to sing in order to land the job.
The movie mogul brothers were impressed with her passionate audition.
"We saw a lot of actresses for this part but Carey sent us a tape and it's very funny," Joel explained.
Ethan added: "Funny because she was angry and p**sed off. It was a really angry reading of a scene with an American accent, and we were a little scared of her."
