Actress Carey Mulligan has nothing but admiration for Jennifer Lawrence after The Hunger Games star published a wage inequality essay online last month (Oct15).

The Hunger Games actress confessed she was too afraid to speak out when she discovered she had been paid significantly less than her male American Hustle co-stars, because she feared she'd pick up a "difficult" reputation. After her article was published, a number of her female peers spoke out in support of the 25-year-old, and a month on, British star Carey has added to the list of supporters.

“I think it’s a good thing for someone like Jennifer to speak out; it means an awful lot to women,” she told Deadline. “Sure, there’s been cynicism toward her speaking out and the fact that she makes a lot of money, but she is completely and selflessly rising above that. (The discrepancy) is inherently unfair and she has an enormous platform to speak out against it.
"Men in Hollywood look up to her because she is powerful. She’s using that platform to correct something that isn’t right. It’s a long overdue conversation and it’s admirable what she has done. This is an age-old issue that’s in every part of society.”

Women's rights has been a subject close to Carey's heart following her work on the period drama Suffragette alongside Meryl Streep and Helena Bonham Carter and while a big debate in Hollywood about the amount of strong roles on offer for women is also raging, Carey looks to Jennifer once again as a person who can change things for the better.

"There’s a lot of films this year that have great roles for women,” she told Variety magazine. “If you look at people like Jennifer Lawrence, who make billions at the box office, you kind of have to think a studio is going to sit up and take notice that women sell tickets. Essentially, that’s what it’s all about. It’s all about money.”
