Chris Evans and Jeremy Renner have apologised for their Black Widow comments.

The Avengers: Age of Ultron stars have been on the promo trail for their new superhero sequel.

As part of one of the interviews they were asked about the romantic tension between Scarlett Johansson’s character and Mark Ruffalo’s Bruce Banner in the new film, after having flirtations with both of their own alter egos, Captain America and Hawkeye respectively.

“She's a sl*t,” a deadpan Jeremy replied when asked by UK outlet Digital Spy about the Black Widow/Hulk romance.

A giggling Chris then added: “I was going to say something along that line. She's a complete wh**e.”

The pair’s comments immediately caused outrage among Avengers fans. And the actors have now come forward to say sorry for their insensitive remarks.

“Yesterday we were asked about the rumours that Black Widow wanted to be in a relationship with both Hawkeye and Captain America. We answered in a very juvenile and offensive way that rightfully angered some fans. I regret it and sincerely apologise,” Chris said in a statement released to JustJared.com.

“I am sorry that this tasteless joke about a fictional character offended anyone,” Jeremy added. “It was not meant to be serious in any way. Just poking fun during an exhausting and tedious press tour.”

Scarlett has portrayed Black Widow in Captain America: Winter Soldier, Iron Man 2 and now the new Avengers film.

There have been rumours recently about a solo film focusing on the Russian assassin, real name Natasha Romanoff.

And Scarlett said in an interview with ScreenRant she’d definitely be interested in that prospect.

“If the audience wants something like that and we could really, you know, carve out a great story for her that’s a continuation of what we already know, then I’d be totally for it,” Scarlett said. “I mean, she’s definitely got –the material is there, you know, and I’m, you know, I’m always willing to slip the suit back on and power through it, if people want to see it.”
