Moviemaker Christopher McQuarrie has signed up for Mission: Impossible 6.

The director helmed the hugely successful Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, which was released earlier this year (15). And on Monday (30Nov15), he confirmed he is involved in the development of the upcoming latest instalment in the franchise.

With a vague tweet, Christopher wrote: "Mission: Accepted #MI6."

However, Christopher did not reveal in which capacity he would be returning - as director or scriptwriter, or both.

The next film, temporarily titled Mission: Impossible 6, will be the third time franchise star Tom Cruise has joined forces with Christopher.

As well as Rogue Nation, Christopher also wrote and directed 2012 film Jack Reacher.

Tom confirmed earlier this year that he would be returning for the sixth story in the franchise. The 53-year-old actor first starred as Agent Ethan Hunt in 1996's Mission: Impossible.

Since then, Tom has developed a reputation for doing his own stunts in the films, including one impressive scene in Rogue Nation, in which the actor scaled the side of an aeroplane as it took off.

It was actually Christopher's idea to include the stunt, and he admits he had no idea Tom would accept the challenge.

"While searching for different locations, the production designer James Bissell bought me a model of this Airbus airplane and presented it as something we could use in the movie," Christopher told Yahoo Movies. "I suggested to Tom, ‘What if you were on the outside of this thing when it took off' I meant it as sort of a half joke, but he said back to me, ‘Yeah I could do that!’ "

“I fly warbirds (vintage military aircrafts), I fly aerobatic airplanes, but this was pretty damn exciting and exhilarating," Tom added in the interview. "The adrenaline was flowing! When that thing was going down the runway it was everything to keep my feet down, then it went up and my body was slamming on the side. I was like 'Whoa, this is intense.' It’s the most dangerous thing I’ve ever done, to be honest."
