(Cover) - EN Movies - Chronicle was the power player at the US box office this Super Bowl weekend.
The sci-fi film directed by Josh Trank earned $22 million in its debut. Chronicle stars Michael B Jordan of American high school football TV drama Friday Night Lights. The low budget feature cost around $12 million to make and is expected to remain popular with audiences in upcoming weeks.
Daniel Radcliffe’s latest movie, the horror thriller The Woman in Black, came in a close second with $21 million in ticket sales.
This is the first major hit for fledgling distributor CBS Films. Daniel, who starred in the Harry Potter film series, had a major draw with young audiences. The film also had a modest budget, costing $13 million to make.
Dramatic thriller The Grey slipped to third position from first place earning $9.5 million in its second week. Liam Neeson stars in the film following a group of oil workers who are chased by a pack of wolves after their plane crashes in the Alaskan arctic. The film has accrued $34.8 million so far and has surpassed its $20 million budget.
Big Miracle, the environmental drama starring Drew Barrymore, was in fourth place with $8.48 million. Vampire adventure Underworld: Awakening rounded out the top five with $5.6 million in takings in its third week in the charts.
