Ben Affleck has congratulated George Clooney on his wedding.

The Hollywood star married British lawyer Amal Alamuddin in Venice, Italy, last night. Many stars, including Anna Wintour and Ben’s good friend Matt Damon, were in attendance, but due to Gone Girl promotional duties Ben couldn’t be there. That hasn’t stopped him wishing the happy couple well though.

“Yeah. Some people have to work and everybody else gets to be in Venice," he joked to ET Canada. "But [George] found a great girl and I’m happy for them. I wish them the best."

George and Amal tied the knot at the seven star Aman Canal Grande Hotel, with Rome's former mayor Walter Veltroni – a good friend of the actor – presiding over the ceremony. Among the 90 guests were Cindy Crawford, Rande Gerber, Bono, Bill Murray, Emily Blunt and John Krasinski.

Fans lined up to see the wedding party arrive, with George pulling several jokey faces as he made his way down the Grand Canal in a boat. All the attendees took chauffeur-driven taxi boats to the hotel, with Matt and his wife Luciana Barroso the first to arrive.

The venue was decorated with white and green flowers including roses and peonies, and after the couple exchanged vows there was champagne and canapés, including polenta with wild mushrooms, and then a five-course dinner.

At the moment there is no information about Amal’s dress, although George opted for a classic tuxedo with black bow tie.

Guests were apparently asked not to bring mobile phones to the wedding, in the hope of stopping any unauthorised pictures from leaking. It’s thought US fashion magazine Vogue has secured the rights to covering the day.

The festivities are expected to continue today at the Cipriani Hotel, which is where many guests are staying.
