David Cronenberg sees Fifty Shades of Grey as "old hat".

The Canadian director, producer and screenwriter is no stranger to working on features with racy themes and isn't afraid to push the boundaries with his offerings.

Asked about the film adaptation of E.L. James' popular book and his view on the way it portrays extreme sexuality through main character Christian Grey's love of BDSM, David admitted he doesn't bat an eyelid at the subject matter.

"I haven't seen the movie, so I really can't comment. I mean, I've read tons about all that. But I must say, I think Variety just listed 16 of the kinkiest movies ever made because of Fifty Shades of Grey being released, and I had two films in that 16 - Crash and Dead Ringers," he told theverge.com. "So I suppose it's sort of old hat to me, I have to say. I did scenes of bondage 30 years ago, so I don't think it's gonna be a revelation to me, let's put it that way."

His latest film Maps to the Stars is another example of his desire to be different. It explores the tormented and corrupt sides of Hollywood, with its main focus ageing actress Havana Segrand (Julianne Moore) and her young assistant (Agatha Weiss) played by Mia Wasikowska.

It was David's first ever mainstream film and the star relished the opportunity to put ideas he'd previously struggled with into action.

"Sure - to create our own star, on Hollywood Boulevard, for an invented actress was fantastic, for example, it was great fun to do that," he recalled. "No matter how dark the material you're shooting is, there's a great sense of childlike playfulness. It was pure fun, really, shooting in LA. And very congenial - I mean, we lit up the Hollywood sign, which is apparently never really done for a movie."
