Matt Damon is reportedly gearing up to reprise his role as Jason Bourne in a new feature.

The 43-year-old actor played the CIA assassin in several films as part of the espionage franchise, which is based on the works of author Robert Ludlum.

And Variety is reporting Universal Pictures is in the “early stages” of soliciting Matt to return to his part as Jason.

Apparently the studio is also asking Bourne director Paul Greengrass to helm the currently untitled sequel film. Paul was at the helm of The Bourne Ultimatum and The Bourne Supremacy, which were released to theatres in 2007 and 2004 respectively.

It was initially reported neither the director nor actor Matt were interested in rejoining the Bourne franchise, but they are said to be on board with Universal’s new proposal and have entered “early talks” with the studio.

Another Bourne sequel is already underway with Jeremy Renner playing the lead character, Aaron Cross. This untitled film, which Justin Lin is attached to direct, is slated for a July 15, 2016 release. But according to Variety, it is now unknown whether the picture will be replaced by the one starring Matt that is allegedly in development.

Jeremy has commented before about what it was like starring in The Bourne Legacy without having The Bourne Identity star Matt making an appearance in the film.

He noted producers did a good job of opening up opportunities for the films to move in a different direction.

“As a fan of the franchise I was just as concerned. Before I saw [The Bourne Legacy] script I thought how can they have a Bourne movie without [Matt Damon playing] Jason Bourne'!” Jeremy told Australian radio hosts Kyle and Jackie O. “After I read the script I realised how they can merge the lines a little bit and what’s really exciting is at the end of this it allows for it to carry on in many different directions... But it’s nothing like Face Off with John Travolta, nothing like that at all!”
