James McAvoy had absolutely no problem hurting Daniel Radcliffe during their first Victor Frankenstein scene.

The two actors star as Victor Von Frankenstein and Igor respectively in the upcoming movie, which sees the iconic gothic horror story told from the perspective of Daniel's monster character. They were thrown straight into the thick of things when the cameras started rolling, and this helped them develop a bond quickly.

"We were close from the get-go," Daniel told Britain's Hello! magazine. "I remember one of our first scenes, when he beats me up. And that's an intense scene to start with, because normally actors are like, 'I don't want to hurt you,' and you don't have that problem with James. I'm very good at getting thrown around and he's very good at throwing me against walls. He is a brilliant actor and a brilliant person."

Daniel rose to fame as boy wizard in the Harry Potter movies, and since they've wrapped he has branched out into more adult roles. He insists this hasn't been part of a larger game plan though; rather that he's decided to score parts which mean something to him.

"It's never... strategic," he said. "I certainly don't have this direct ideal of what I want to do, but I know what I don't want to do. I don't choose projects worrying about what other people will think of it. If I think, 'Do I like this part' Will it challenge me and make me better as an actor' and the answer is, 'Yes,' then I do it. If a Brad Pitt or a George Clooney film comes out, I'll go and see it because I trust them. I want people to do the same with me."

In fact, his work is so important to him that Daniel has waited for the perfect parts over the years.

"A lot of the work I'm doing right now, some of these scripts were floating around about five years ago and I needed to grow up before we went ahead," he said. "I'm a much better actor now."
