(Cover) - EN Movies - David Lynch says there is “happiness” in his “dark worlds”.

The eccentric director is well known for creating some of the most complex movies in the business including Eraserhead, Mulholland Drive and Blue Velvet.

His TV series Twin Peaks became an iconic example of surrealist expression.

Although his films can be troubling to watch, David revealed that he finds happiness in the process rather than the subject matter.

"It's not so much what you make; it's the lack of suffering when you make it,” he explained in an interview with British newspaper The Guardian. “There's so much happiness in the dark worlds, or in translating the ideas that come. And if you can get rid of the negativity that restricts your energy, it's as though a load has lifted. I mean, you can't control what people are gonna think about a movie or a painting. So you better enjoy the doing."

However, the director explains that the ideas don’t come from him.

"None of the things are yourself, not really. The ideas come from someplace else. It's like fish," he said "You didn't make the fish. You caught the fish. Now you can cook it in a good way or a bad way, but that's as far as it goes. The fish came from someplace else. And sometimes...Sometimes it talks back to you. Tells you how it wants to be cooked."

The fish metaphor comes back to David’s belief in transcendental meditation. The director began meditating in the 70’s on the set of Eraserhead. David has even written a book on the subject entitled Catching the Big Fish.

“It's beautiful” he gushed. “We're beautiful. Happiness lies within. Enlightenment is our birthright.”
