Johnny Depp doesn’t “give a f***” if people hate his films.
The 51-year-old actor has starred in countless movies, earning him Golden Globe and Oscar nominations across almost 30 years in the business. And he’s reached a point where he doesn’t care what people think of his work.
"First, I reached a point where I cared so much and was so diligent in terms of approaching the work," he recalled in an interview with American magazine Details. "Then you get to where you care so f***ing much that it gets goddamn beleaguering, you know' But then a great thing happens. Suddenly you care enough to not give a f***, because not giving a f***, that's the total liberation. Being game to try anything."
The Dark Shadows star attributed his carefree attitude to the late and great actor Marlon Brando. He says it was one of his quotes that encouraged him to just let go.
"As Marlon once so beautifully f***ing said to me, life is a birdsong,” Johnny mused. “That's stuck with me. What is really satisfying is, like Marlon, getting to that place where he just didn't give a f***."
He has played some outlandish characters in the past, such as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean and Willy Wonka in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. But in real life, he’s apparently far more reserved.
"I'm f***in' shy, man," Johnny confessed. "I'm living, in a sense, like a fugitive. I don't like to be in social situations - it's fine for me in a weird way, having to run and hide. Less and less, I have the opportunity to observe, because I'm the one being observed."
Johnny can next be seen in Into the Woods, which is released on December 25. And according to him, his introverted nature works well with “dark humour”.
"I delight in the approach we took with the Big Bad Wolf," he explained, of his character in the upcoming movie. "There's a wonderful dark humor throughout."
