Actor Elijah Wood claims filming The Last Witch Hunter in the bowels of a mine was a “crazy” experience on so many levels.

The 34-year-old star portrays the 37th Dolan in the forthcoming film, which sees Vin Diesel play immortal character Kaulder as the witch-hunter who attempts to save New York City from a supernatural plague.

Some scenes were filmed deep inside a mine and Elijah found the experience trippy to say the least.

“It’s cool. I’ve never shot in a mine before,” Elijah laughed to Collider during an on set interview. “We’re only in day two. Ask me in a week. We have some breaks, but they’re not long enough. The crew’s here all day.”

Elijah added that lunch was the time where people could step outside because it’s close enough to the entrance where they could get fresh air.

“But it is kind of refreshing to see sunlight when you’re stuck inside all day because the hours pass and you have no sense of time or no bearing on time so it’s a bit crazy, but it’s cool,” he continued. “I’ve never been in this kind of environment before that wasn’t a set so to actually be in a real mine is awesome.”

Elijah was attracted to starring in The Last Witch Hunter for numerous reasons.

The fact this story is not part of a pre-existing franchise was a huge factor in his decision to sign on to the cast.

“Especially at this budget level. At this size, it’s seemingly increasingly rare,” he said. “We have exceptions to that rule every year and it’s great to see that, but it’s just really refreshing to sit down and read something that was crafted and conceived from a completely original, unique place.

“I find witchcraft to be interesting. It’s something that doesn’t often get explored in cinema or hasn’t been in a while. I think the approach is interesting in that it’s not a horror film and it doesn’t really have horror film elements. It’s more of an action-adventure film, fantasy adventure in a way, and that was something that was kind of intriguing.”
