Ellen Page: Pussy Riot helped me come out

Ellen Page's coming out was all thanks to the Pussy Riot documentary.

The Juno actress revealed she was gay in February 2014, during a speech she was giving at a Time to Thrive conference.

Since then Ellen has been happy to lend her voice to the subject, but her openness about her sexuality hasn't always been the case.

"I remember watching the Pussy Riot documentary and thinking, 'Oh my God. The courage of these people.' It's just like, 'Dude, come out - just say you're gay. You're privileged, you have a family. You have no excuse.' It kind of got to the point of - I felt guilty, to be honest with you, and I believe I absolutely should have. It's become kind of a moral imperative to speak up. I know there's been so much progress, but there's still so much suffering in America, in Canada, and all over the world," Ellen told Time.

Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer is a 2013 film based on the court cases of feminist Russian group Pussy Riot, after they stage a performance on the steps of a church in Moscow.

Not only is the topic close to Ellen's heart, it has also seeped into her work. The actress can next be seen in Freeheld, a story about a lesbian couple dealing with the tragedy of one of them being diagnosed with cancer.

Julianne Moore plays Ellen's on screen partner, but Ellen doesn't want to hear people calling their portrayal brave.

"That's borderline offensive," she vented.

"I'm never going to be considered brave for playing a straight person and nor should I be."
