Emily Blunt’s life was infinitely changed when she became a mother.
The 32-year-old actress welcomed daughter Hazel into the world, her first child with husband John Krasinski, in February 2014.
While Emily’s professional life is going from strength to strength, she insists nothing can equal the joy that parenthood brings her.
“It changes you infinitely in a rather overwhelming way,” Emily told Britain’s Radio Times magazine of having a family. “The best way I can describe it is that it’s like this lovely distraction that I always have.
“It’s always there and I love that feeling.”
British-born Emily has starred in films including The Devil Wears Prada, Looper and Sicario.
She lives in Los Angeles with The Office actor John and officially became a US citizen in August (15).
However, Emily added in the interview that living in LA and working in Hollywood can often be difficult – especially while raising a child.
“It’s complicated! I love so much about LA and I hate a lot about it, too,” Emily explained.
“I hate that it’s a one-industry town and that the quest for success emanates from every corner of it. It can be suffocating in some ways.
“But I love my friends there, I love the weather and it’s a very easy place to raise a child.
“A lot of the time we live outside of LA in the countryside, in a place called Ojai, which is lovely and offers more respite than the city.”
One of the major conversation topics in Hollywood at the moment is the difference in pay between female and male actors. While Emily has herself has been a victim of sexism, she admits she has somewhat grown used to the attitude in Hollywood. And she thinks that continuously talking about the subject may lead to it becoming more of a problem than ever.
“It’s shocking,” Emily said. “But at the same time I’m used to hearing studios crunching numbers on everything, from gender to whether someone has facial hair in the movie.
“Sure, I’ve experienced sexism but not that often any more. I do think I’m coming from a place of more confidence now because I’ve been doing this for 14 years and my opinion is more valued than it used to be.
“But I sometimes feel that we can exacerbate the problem by talking about it more.”
