Freida Pinto likes to think she “actively” pursued Dev Patel.
The Indian actress, 29, has strong beliefs and thinks karma has a lot to do with what comes her way in life. However, she thinks her successful relationship with 24-year-old Dev, who she met on the set of Slumdog Millionaire in 2008, is also due to other factors.
“Maybe a little good karma, but part of me wants to believe that I actively pursued the relationship,” she explained to ksta.de.
“I knew exactly what I wanted in a partner: someone with a sense of humour, who doesn’t take themselves too seriously, is mature and sensitive. When you know what you’re looking for, you’ll know how to use that chance when you meet them.”
Freida grew up in Mumbai, but later moved to America to pursue her acting dreams. She works closely with Plan USA to help girls around the world who don’t have the same chances.
It’s a cause close to her heart, as Freida knows how important it is to be a strong woman.
“I have my parents and my education to that. No one pushes me around,” she said. “I decide what I want to do and who I want to be with.
“It also helps that I grew up in Mumbai. Over there, you literally have to prove yourself every minute of every day, otherwise you’ll disappear in the chaos and crowds.
“These experiences also gave me the confidence to accept a role like Slumdog and then answer questions from journalists all over the world.”
Following the success of Slumdog Millionaire, Freida is now starring in Desert Dancer, Knight of Cups and Unity. She admits being reminded of the classic film can be frustrating when she has so many new things in the pipeline, but she also knows how much it helped her get where she is.
“Sometimes I think, ‘I don’t want to be the Slumdog-girl anymore,’” she admitted.
“But when I hit a low, I remember I’ve been able to experience so much thanks to that film.”
