Furious 7 has surpassed the $1 billion mark after its impressive showing at the weekend box office.

Box Office Mojo reports the action movie took in over $18.2 million at American theatres since Friday April 24, bringing its domestic gross total to $320 million. It’s a huge hit internationally too and Furious 7’s performance last weekend brought its worldwide sales total to $1.3 billion. This extraordinary amount of money has landed the feature a place in box office history, as Furious 7 is the third American film to have earned over $1 billion overseas. Furious 7 first reached theatres on April 3. The Universal Pictures release boasts an all-star lineup of actors including Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriguez, Jason Statham, Jordana Brewster, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Elsa Pataky, Kurt Russell, Luke Evans and Paul Walker, who died in November 2013 after being involved in a car accident. The Fast and Furious franchise is expanding, as star Vin announced to fans at CinemaCon in Las Vegas an eighth sequel has been greenlit and will reach theatres in 2017.

In second at the box office this weekend is comedy Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2, which took in $15.5 million in ticket sales. This is the picture’s second week in theatres and so far it has earned nearly $44 million domestically and $61 million worldwide. The comedy starring Kevin James centres on the zany exploits security guard Paul finds himself embroiled in while he is attempting to enjoy a Las Vegas vacation. The movie, which is being distributed by Columbia Pictures, was produced by Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison Productions for $30 million.

Blake Lively’s new historical drama The Age of Adaline took third with gross profits of over $13 million. The Age of Adaline centres on actress Blake’s character Adaline Bowman, a woman who must decide whether she should give up her immortality for love.The Lakeshore Entertainment production was made with a budget of $25 million.
